Its quite a few years since Jon first started blowing the sax and he thinks there is still such a long way to go with many notes to play with considering names like Parker, Coltrane, Gorden and Marsellis who have gone before.
Jon studied classical and contemporary Sax tecniques with teacher Enrike Arostegi in the Tolosa Music Academy. He started learning in his (trademark) casual style actually wishing he could be studying flute but with no places remaining he was forced to play this more challenging instrument. Actually to anwer his sax's calling he had to listen to his older sister's advice.
- Play the Sax.
- What's that?
- It's what the dog played in the 'trotamúsicos' cartoon.
- Ahh, ok, i like it and whats more i think the dog is cool!
The romantic story started like this but the flute is still there, never forgotten and waiting to be fully discovered and more recently he's been know to blow a few notes on a borrowed flute (yes, that's borrowed and not, as is common with musicians, a paraphrase for stolen!)
Jon also played 2 years with the Seminario Internacional de Jazz de Zarautz (X. Ford, Iñaki Salvador, M. Andueza,G. Mc Guill, J. Robles... fueron algunos de sus profesores) taking his first steps in Jazz and unsterstanding for the first time what it is to improvise in front of an audience. From here on he has taken learning into his own hands making use of the gaps in his Architecture course. In actual fact Jamix owes his participation to this course as the singer is also studying architecture which means they get to share musical as well as spacial projects. Like this the first jams, gigs recordings started and today it still feels like the first day we got together (although Jon may say differently) .
As well as playing in Jamix Jon plays in the marching band of Tolosa (www.tmb.com), the street band Bonberenea ( a group started by the party addicted youth of their town) and Desordutan (a group of mates playing pop rock, www.myspace.com/desordutan). Understanding that each style of music has its moment and looking for the diffeent sensations that music is capable of bringing to both the player and the listener, Jamix has something for everyone.
